Solutions:

The formula to find the area is $$d = 1.4\sqrt{A}$$.  The distance given is 12 feet.  Solving for A,  $$12=1.4\sqrt{A}$$

Squaring both sides $$144 = 1.96A$$  The projection area is approximately 73.47 square feet.

If the distance is doubled, the new equation is $$24=1.4\sqrt{A}$$ Solving for A, $$576=1.96A$$.     The new projection area is  approximately 293.88 square feet. By doubling the distance we have increased the projection area by a factor of 4.
