Solutions:

The formula to find the area is \(d = 1.4\sqrt{A}\).  The distance given is 12 feet.  Solving for A,  \(12=1.4\sqrt{A}\)

Squaring both sides \(144 = 1.96A\)  The projection area is approximately 73.47 square feet.

If the distance is doubled, the new equation is \(24=1.4\sqrt{A}\) Solving for A, \(576=1.96A\).     The new projection area is  approximately 293.88 square feet. By doubling the distance we have increased the projection area by a factor of 4.
