Strategies to Solve Problems with Percents

  1. A body shop estimates the cost of painting John’s car at $4,000 plus a garage fee of 15%. John needs to  determine how much he will pay in total.

John believes he can work out the answer by multiplying 1.15 by 4,000.

Is John correct?  Use a double number line and a second strategy to demonstrate whether John’s strategy is correct:

  1. Find 30% more than 90 using both double number lines and percent strips.
