RATL 1 | Lesson 1 | Try This! (Solutions: Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Number Lines)

1. How many number lines were used? Why?

Three number lines were used.

The first two number lines were for each of the two addends. The third number line shows the sum of the two fractions.

2. How were the number lines partitioned?

The first two number lines show the original denominator of each fraction and the common denominator represented in tick marks. The last number line shows the tick marks for the common denominator.

3. Use multiple number lines to add: \(\dfrac{1}{3}+\dfrac{1}{6}\)

4. Show how the same number line strategy will work to subtract: \(\dfrac{3}{8}-\dfrac{1}{3}\)
